Burnaby Self-Guided Farm Tours

With Tourism Burnaby and support from the City of Burnaby, we have developed and released a self-guided map listing participating farms and nurseries that are opened to the public within Burnaby�s Big Bend area.





Did you know that Burnaby has some of the most productive farm land in the region?



Did you know that there are a number of active farms, and related businesses, in South Burnaby that you can visit?



At last count, 43 farms were in operation in Burnaby, growing everything from cranberries to zucchini!



Take the whole family along on this self-guided tour of some of the agriculture sights of Burnaby�s Big Bend.



Visit Burnaby�s �country in the city� to shop for fresh local produce, tour impressive greenhouses, meet some farm animals, and try some tasty treats - all close to home!

About Big Bend Community



It is a mixed-use community with various land uses such as parks, open spaces, agricultural, residential and industrial. Big Bend is bounded by Marine Drive (to the North) and located within Boundary Road to Fenwick Street. The Fraser River runs south of the area.



Agriculture is a very important activity in the Big Bend area. It is a significant producer of field vegetable production, in the Greater Vancouver Regional District, following Surrey and Delta.

Who should attend? All ages! Parents and kids interested in bees and their impact on your garden. Did you know that up to one-third of all our foods depends on bees? They have an important job in ensuring that we have access to food! Because this is what your grocery store would look like without bees! 



Let's give them all the help they need to survive! To start, why not...





Join beekeeper Andrew Scott and biologist Robyn Worcester on Saturday April 23rd in this collaborative workshop held at the Burnaby Village Museum. 



View an active demonstration hive, observe bee BEE-haviour (sorry, I could not resist!) and learn more about the physical structures of the bees and their hive.

Water Management and Conservation

Sunny days seem to be here to stay. This summer particularly gardeners may welcome the following information about Water Conservation Kits. This is because of the current dry weather threatening a more severe drought and more expected water supply shortages going forward.

Some people question the need to conserve water in parts of the world where we see so much rainfall but in the face of the changing climate and scarcity of resources, the sustainable use of water is in fact a priority these days for all cities. The BC Government has informed that the Water Sustainability Act coming into effect in 2016 will enable better management of all water resources. Surface water and Ground water will be managed as one resource. 

This will hopefully help to also ensure that all users of water resources including businesses, farms, fisheries and home-owners can manage the impact of dry weather conditions and respond to the water supply shortages appropriately. Metro Vancouver has recently restricted water use for discretionary purposes such as lawn sprinkling due to the unreasonably hot and dry weather. 

If you're interested in home water conservation, check out the outdoor and indoor water conservation kits offered to Burnaby residents at Burnaby City Hall.
